It is necessary for every Muslim must learn Quran either online or offline with Tajweed. It is obligatory to read and understand the commands of Allah Subhana hu Wata’la that are elaborated in the Holy Quran.

Have you ever pondered what does the word Tajweed means? Well, it is interesting to know. So, Tajweed linguistically refers to beautification or betterment. It is derived from an Arabic verb Jawwada or Yujawwidu that further descends as Hassana or Yuhassinu that is “he made better or he beautified.”

Tajweed Is A Linguistic Science of Arabic Language

Yes, it is a proper scientific methodology that enables the reciter to pronounce Quranic letters and words with appropriate articulation and annotation. Also, it teaches the reader to deliver letters with permanent and temporary characteristics according to the guidelines annexed to those letters.

So, learn Quran online with Tajweed is also necessary as it makes the readers aware of the facts, rights, and dues associated with every letter of the Holy Quran.

What Does Imam ibn Al Jazari Say?

Imam ibn Al Jazari defines the Tajweed as a perpetual practice and imitation of words uttered by the teacher. He says:

The wholesome translation of the above saying is; “I don’t know a better way, if one wants to attain mastery in Tajweed, than oral drill and practice of imitation of its master.”

Tajweed Definition According to The Macmillan Dictionary

Macmillan Dictionary defines the Tajweed as follows:

“It is the set of rules for pronouncing the Arabic language when reciting the Quran.”

So, it refers to Tajweed as some sort of guideline that provides a road map for the proper delivery of sounds of the letter. Therefore, some scholars take it as scientific methodology as well.

History of the Quran with Tajweed

As the flowers and trees existed even before classifying them, Tajweed was there as soon as the first revelation was observed by the Holy Prophet (PBUH). For instance, a man was reciting the Holy Quran to Abdullah ibn e Masood (R.A) as, “InnamasSadaqâtu lil-Fuqara-i wal-Masâkeen.”

Ibn e Masood (R.A) said, “This is not how the messenger of Allah recited to me!” and then corrected him by reciting it as, “lil-Fuqarââ-i wal-Masâkeen.” Ibn e Masood (R.A) prolonged the vowels.

So, this example shows that the Tajweed was built-in and not devised. However, the scientific study of Tajweed was started in the 2nd Hijri. Furthermore, Abu Muzahim Al-Khaqaani made it as a separate science in 4th Hijri.

Development of Harkaat And Sifaat

Abul Aswad, realizing the need of the hour, hired someone, and directed him to put some signs according to the lip’s moments and delivery of letters. He asked to put a sign on top of the letter when he opens his mouth during Quran recitation. Also, put a sign below the letter when he recites the sound of “ee.” This is how “Harkaat” was developed.

On the other hand, when non-Arabs embraced Islam, they were in different languages. For instance, in some languages, there was “p” instead of “b.” So, when they articulate “b” it sounds “p.” Therefore, Arabic language scholars realized that there should be something more along with articulation. So, the “Sifaat” was developed.

Why Is It That Important for Quran Recitation?

Well, this is the main concern of our write-up. Every language holds some guidelines and principles. Similarly, the Arabic language holds some predetermined rules. And it becomes more significant when it comes to the recitation of the Holy Quan.

First and the foremost thing is to follow the orders of Allah, the most exalted. Allah Subhana hu wata’la says (what means):

“… and recite the Quran with measured recitation.”(Quran 73:4)

So, it is obligatory to recite the Holy Quran with proper sounds, articulation, and annotation. However, many of us do not know how to recite correctly which is not a recommended practice. So, a Muslim (male or female) must have to learn either online or offline Quran with Tajweed.

On the other hand, each Arabic letter has a specific Makhrij (from which part of tongue, throat, and lips a certain word will originate) and Sifaat (Characteristics and attributes of a word). Therefore, learning Makharij and Sifaat would make a reciter able enough to recite as the Holy Prophet (PBUH) was used to recite.

Advantages of Learning Quran With Tajweed

There is a bounty of benefits when you learn Quran with Tajweed. A few of the numerous advantages are elaborated below.

Learn Quran With Tajweed For Spiritual Realization

Well, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) said (what means):

“Those who can recite the Holy Quran meticulously and precisely will be among the company of Allah’s angels.”

So, you can be one of them if you are able enough to recite the Holy Quran meticulously. Muslims are always fond of getting higher ranks before Allah Subhana hu Wata’la. So, this is the best way to get blessings of Allah, the most exalted.

The Beauty of The Language

You know, no one can get the idea of a language unless s/he holds a true command on it. Similarly, a reader with appropriate understanding and articulation will be able to recognize the apparent as well as hidden meanings of the Holy Quran.

Also, it will prevent you from making fatal mistakes that even lead to “ShirK” at times. For instance, the wrong delivery of a single letter can change the meanings of the whole text. So, learning Tajweed will make you expert enough to avoid such mistakes.

More Understanding of The Quran

The Tajweed doesn’t refer to only articulation and pronunciation of letters but it also involves the understanding of history, interpretations, and applications of rules.

So, a Muslim, after learning Tajweed would be able to implement rules in practical life and other domains of language aspects. Without Tajweed, the knowledge of the Quran would be shallow.

Bottom Line

In a nutshell, you can say that the understanding of the message of Allah Subhana hu Wata’la is incomplete without Tajweed. So, a true Muslim must have to learn Quran reading, recitation, and understanding.
